The brief

Airbnb wanted to close out the year with a big thank you to its employees and a celebration of their “Live Anywhere, Work Anywhere” ethos. The Employee Experience Team wanted to send a gift that reflected this message, delivering the same experience to over 8,000 employees around the world while avoiding unnecessary waste or unwanted gifts.


Our gift solution

We put together a bespoke gift campaign using Airbnb assets and custom messaging. Each gift recipient was able to make a choice between one of two physical gifts, a backpack and a cotton blanket, or the option to donate to



Customized with a screenprinted logo, this backpack is made by Ucon Acrobatics, a Berlin-based design studio that has put creativity and sustainability at the heart of every product for over 20 years. It was important that our partners share the belief that nothing should suffer for a quality product — not humans, not animals and not the environment.



The design on the blanket was commissioned by us from Timothy Goodman, and is inspired by themes of travel, culture and community. It’s made on traditional looms and uses up to 70% recycled fibers, helping alleviate the impact of textile waste while keeping artisanal skills alive and well.




We also gave recipients the option to donate to, an independent nonprofit focused on helping people share housing and resources with each other in times of crisis. People who didn’t need another blanket or bag could choose to give their gift forward, preventing any items going to waste, and we sent out a special pack of enamel pin badges to everyone who chose this option, to thank them for their generosity.
